We stalk through the woods, each of our steps leaving fresh footprints in the snow. The snow started yesterday, and the heavy winds piled up the powder in drifts, making it difficult for us to navigate our way to the Strigoi hideout. I have been assured that we will make it back to Rășinar by morning, but the flurry of severe weather and darkening sky tell me otherwise. “Over here,” I whisper to the other three. “I hear movement to the west.” I want to point out that being a vampire is helping us right now, so it can’t be all that bad, but I keep my lips sealed and my ears open as we gently walk around the massive tree trunks and down toward a lake.
The trees and rocks are covered in a white blanket, but the lake is not yet frozen. The water is dead still, with no fish breaking the surface.
“Death’s lake,” Aaden whispers and the other two shudders.
“Appropriately named,” I add and go to Stefan’s side as Aaden gives the signal for us to split up. Dumitru goes with Aaden and Stefan and I hurry down the west bank of the lake. Behind us are miles of trees and unpopulated land. We are as far away from society as possible, with only our weapons and my fangs to protect us.
Stefan stops dead, I stop a few steps behind him and crane my neck to look around him. That’s when I hear it, as swift as the wind and only for a second that it would be easy for an untrained ear to miss.
I whistle, and Stefan turns around. I give him a signal to stand behind me. Obediently, he hurries behind me and points his crossbow in the opposite direction. I move the end of my crossbow to follow the noise along the edge of the tree line. Quickly, I jump around and let the arrow fly through the air, which hits a tree trunk. Stefan turns, panicked, and shoots blindly into the tree line. “Stop,” I say and hold my hand up. “I can hear it. We wounded it, but it will not last long.”
Stefan moves forward and lowers my crossbow. “I know. We’ve been doing this for a long time.” He puts his fingers into his mouth and whistles loudly. “Aaden and Dumitru will be on their way.”
It all happens so quickly. The female strigoi jumps out from behind a tree and lunges at Stefan. I throw myself at the strigoi just before her mouth reaches Stefan’s neck. She throws me onto the ground with a skull-crushing thud, hard enough that if I wasn’t a vampire, I’d be dead. I pull on her white hair while she tries to break free of me and get her human blood bag – I already know how these parasites think. She bites my arms, but I keep ahold of her hair, not letting her get free when I see a flash of silver fly through the air. The strigoi’s head falls onto my chest.
